Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea

Snoring is a common condition affecting about 20% of adult population. It could be simple snoring or sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea is when you stop breathing very frequently during sleep.

If chronic snoring or sleep apnoea is troublesome then you consult your GP, who may then refer you to see an ENT specialist.

The specialist will examine your nose and throat and determine where the problem lies. He may arrange sleep oximetry which is a portable machine to painlessly measure your oxygen levels when you sleep. It will also measure your pulse rate.

Depending on the all the investigations, various treatment options will be discussed with you. Treatment may be weight loss, nasal or throat surgery, a dental splint or CPAP machine (ventilator).
